Ten.One Thousand, Seven Hundred & Thirty-One

  1. Almost cold.

  2. Hunting in the dark for slippers.

  3. Three cards, all of them contrary. Uh-oh.

  4. Hot coffee in a small cup. Tips of fingers burning.

  5. The sound of large limbs hitting the roof and rolling onto the deck. Pine needles everywhere. Sometimes, the trees sway so much they look as though they might snap in half.

  6. I step out onto the deck in hopes to feel the heat of the sun but I am just cold instead.

  7. How is it already 1 o’clock?

  8. This handful of sentences feels hard to write. What else to do but take a break. I turn on Dua Lipa and dance in hopes that it will shake something loose.

  1. Today, we start out standing, staring out toward the trees.

  4. Blessed. We walk into the town square and find coffee and a pastry. The sun is bright. There are people everywhere. He says he’s glad we live somewhere smaller.

  6. We end up eating out anyway.

  7. Bikers. Black bikers. They are undoubtedly heading back down valley after gathering at Buster’s. We nod at each other as they pass by. George Clinton and Janet Jackson and Stevie Wonder blaring from the motorcycles.

  3. To sit and drink coffee without interruption is a gift.

  4. After the call I yell out his name. No answer. I look for his shoes under the bench: red pair, blue pair, black pair. What is missing? The baseball cleats.

  5. Down the mountain again. Maybe that option will work.

  6. I hear how it is sounding as it’s coming out of my mouth and even though I think I’m speaking without emotion, I know how it’s landing and there’s no way to keep it from landing like it is.

  6. She tells me that she's excited about summer this year because now she has friends.

  7. He sends me a video of the boys floating in the little bit of water in the river. A sweet moment.

  8. I could scream.

  9. It is quiet except for the occasional sound of a table saw. Or maybe it is not that quiet. Maybe I've just become accustomed to the constant sounds of chainsaws and helicopters and leaf blowers that all of it is just white noise.

  2. She tells me about how she only has two more days until her vacation begins and that this Friday is her birthday and I am trying to find her name tag because even though we talk all the time, I can’t remember her name. I can’t remember many things these days.

  3. I drop the container and a waterfall of orange juice pours onto the floor.

  4. He tells me I am having trouble holding things these days. “My hands,” I say. Some mornings, I can barely hold on to anything.

  5. Two calls, one lasagna, then to the gym for inventory and work while they play.

  6. I try not to be frustrated.

  7. He tells me about an article he read about foxes giving birth under decks. I’d rather it be foxes than the rattlesnakes they talked about at work.

  1. I rush down to put the uniforms in the dryer but she’s already done it. I can see the thin band of light coming from under her bathroom door.

  2. How is it already time to go? I haven’t even had a sip of coffee.

  3. I tell him about the email. About its irony. About how this was my whole point about deadlines.

  4. I keep looking up to cheer on the girls as they step up to the plate. She asks me if I’m working. I tell her that I’m trying, but I am really struggling. Really, really struggling.

  2. The sound of the birds is always the loudest right before sunrise.

  4. I get all of them into the car at just the right time. Small cup of coffee that I should not be drinking.

  5. I raise the blinds and see the blooming dogwood. I walk over and turn the heat on. Maybe I will be here all alone.

  6. I always learn something new on Thursdays.

  7. I feel like everyone is asking me if I am ok with what is happening and this must be because of the face that I was making on yesterday’s Zoom.

  8. But really, I am proud of myself for being able to talk coherently while driving loops around Saint Helena.

  9. Game One while watching Game Two and checking on Game Three. Game One over, roll over to Game Three while watching Game Two. He asks me if he can go to A&W. I say “no,” multiple times.

  10. All wins for the Sommers. Gott’s in the dark. A table full of women and young ladies. The youngest boy sits down. “The girls will always be a little older,” she says. “No, the girls will always be a little smarter,” he says back. “You’ve been taugth well.”

  1. So cold.

  2. The thermostat says 61 degrees. I turn the heat back on.

  3. I mistakenly reduced the cardamom rose almond milk. Now there is not enough.

  4. I put my pajama shirt on over my sweater. Then I put the wool blazer over the pajama shirt. I am still not warm enough.

  5. I remember that I don’t have a poker face and I realize that I probably don’t look as excited or interested as I should be.

  6. Adelante.

  7. I take a walk to clear my head and see her father. I tell him that I am going to try to watch her race. He reminds me of the time. Once you begin to recognize a face, you see that face everywhere.

  8. “Is this how you are everywhere at once?” “Yes. It’s all Hotspot and Laptop.”

  9. “Which one of these kids belongs to you?” “None of them,” I say. I laugh.

This is because I yell at them. I try to explain that the yelling is just frustration and that the frustration is about the behavior, not them as individuals. It’s the behaviors that get me upset, not them. I love them. I dislike the behaviors. “We love you,” I say.

  6. It was the fence in front of the house that really got me. Made out of wine barrel staves, a small see-through box with dusty plastic grapes. The popcorn ceiling is sparkling.

  9. He’s standing behind him while he makes his taco. He looks at me and then looks at him, looks at me again. “I think he’s got you now,” I say. “I thought he felt taller.”

  4. We both talk about the problem with being in a small town is that some people are afraid of being too vocal because of how it may affect their businesses. But we both agree that we’d rather die knowing we stood up for what is right. We place our faith in something higher.

  7. I scurry across the deck in my dress and bare feet and I am reminded that summer is almost here and how much I will really miss this house when it is time for us to leave it.

  9. I tell him, “yes, it’s cold, but we’re only cold because we live on the west coast and we are so close to the ocean, and, really, isn’t amazing that we live here?”

  10. We find a pizza place and order a large pepperoni and an order of cheesy pesto breadsticks. I am slightly annoyed that he is making this all from scratch. It’s already 8:15pm.

  1. A little cooler.

  2. Baked potatoes and caramelized onions. No coffee. Day two of no coffee.

  3. Most times, no one wants input. They just want to be heard.

  4. He promises to get the work done and I believe him.

  5. I sit on the bridge for six minutes and then realize that they must be working on guardrails on this end of the trail too. So I relax and tell myself that no one will die if I’m not on the Zoom call.

  6. Progress.

  7. But really, this is why we live here. There is no other place like it.

  8. I can’t find the right temperature. Too hot in the sun, too cold in the house. I drag my laptop and water to a different part of the porch for the perfect amount of shade. A little black blizzard scurries out of my way.
