8. We share our last meals. Duck confit, gratin potatoes, haricot verts, and a big bottle of Burgundy. Creme brulee for dessert.

10. I feel like there is some direction.

1. I keep thinking about the dead robin on the deck. Is it still there?

2. Quiet and coffee.

3. I don’t really want to be in my emails at this time of the morning.

4. The skirt feels fancy yet liberating

5. He tells me that I was sending emails well before he was awake. I tell him that I’m not sure that’s a good thing.

6. You can feel his warmth and authenticity through the screen and that rarely happens.

7. I worry about how close we are even though we are outdoors. I think we are all pushing it out of our minds.

8. I feel a little bit of imposter syndrome creeping up and then remember that it is just an opportunity to learn.

1. I hear the door creak but I’m too tired to get out of the bed to see who it is. My guess is the big kid is on the hunt for a midnight snack while he sneaks youtube.

2. The alarm will be going off in a little over three hours. I try not to let that frighten me.

3. Tiger King.

4. I heard a loud thud against the window and turn my head to see a robin on its back, shuddering, before going limp.

5. We name the trees. The sky is bright blue. The grass and weeds are vibrant shades of green.

6. One day, I’ll be able to sit still long enough to complete a project.

7. “It’s either mess up your shoes or not play.”

8. We needed this win.

9. Twenty-four points and still an L.

10. I am probably more tired than I want to believe.

Ten.One Thousand, Six Hundred & Forty-Eight

1. So sore.

2. Oh yes, the booster shot.

3. Nerves, but for a reason.

4. I try to stay focused but nature is busy outside of the window: a fat gray squirrel, a finch, a broad-chested robin.

5. Okay. So we are on the same page.

6. A quiet thud. I look down and see a wasp on the slate tile beside my foot.

7. “Wasp tells you that there is a reason for the season. Whatever you are going through actually advances you unwittingly.”

8. So much potential. I feel like we keep saying that over and over again: “There is so much potential and opportunity.”

9. They stick around until their teammate has finished, and that means more than everything else.

10. I need everyone to stop talking.

1. I pour coffee in the mug and then more coffee into a to-go mug to take upstairs.

2. 6:30am virtual calls with your best friend. One hour is never enough.

3. Where is everyone? They start to slide through the door at 7:58.

4. Two, four, six, eight, nine. I will play the tenth.

5. Focus.

6. That’s a lot of dry needles.

7. On the way out she tells me she hopes my arm isn’t too sore.

8. My arm feels quite sore.

1. I can keep on sleeping.

1. Better wake up now.

3. The hallways is fragrant; she left a candle burning again.

4. We begin our practice and I immediately drop into gratitude while looking at the way the light makes the wood walls glow.

5. Can always tell when it’s been more than a week.

10. If my goal for the season was to make them more confident, and that is what I’m seeing, then I am, indeed successful, no matter the record.

1. Less sweaty.

5. She tells me about her trip to Turkey and we talk about the poetry of the place.

9. I grab a box of pizza and eat it in the car. When you eat breakfast at 5:30 in the morning you can’t not eat until 1pm.

10. Not enough energy. I worry about tomorrow. If tomorrow happens.

1. Late getting downstairs.

2. Last package of ramen. I need to add these to the list.

3. Hashbrowns and bacon for them. I check my watch. There is still time.

4. I get them out on time - early. New episode of the podcast. Something about a levitating nun.

5. I look in the rearview mirror and see a face I don’t want to see.

6. I tell him that I keep telling my husband that I can’t imagine working in a more beautiful place. “Does it get old?” “I hear it doesn’t.”

7. I was overthinking it.

8. But what is it that we’re doing?

9. Losing my voice.

10. Maybe the most exciting 8th-grade basketball game I’ve ever seen.

1. No frogs.

3. Skip cooking and make them eat cereal.

10. I decide to keep it light. Why not? Pain for the sake of pain seems unnecessary in times like these. And, maybe, this is the one place where we all get to have a little bit of fun. I could be projecting.

1. Easy-up.

2. Back to routine.

3. Hashbrowns and sausage and coffee.

4. I hop into the car with the mug of coffee. The podcast is on. Werewolves. I missed this.

5. I like this guy.

6. So much sun.

7. Too many text messages about canceled games and rescheduled games and how the season will continue.

8. “So we’re down to seven?” The gym feels so empty with only nine of us.

9. Her shorts are on backward.

10. We gather outside at the end and there is still some light left in the sky and I am reminded that summer is coming. Summer is coming.

Ten.One Thousand, Six Hundred & Thirty-Nine

1. Piecing together things in my dreams.

2. So, so cold.

3. I’ll let it all stay up until MLK Day.

4. Just need to get it done.

5. He tells me that he’s made fourteen calls already.

6. Negotiating which family member he can bump off of his contact list.

7. No rain.

9. I tell her about the pencils because I know she will understand.

Ten.One Thousand, Six Hundred & Thirty-Eight

1. First morning light.

2. Sunshine turning everything green and brown.

3. The store is unusually quiet for this late in the morning.

4. I look at the little girl in the stroller and think about the days when my own were that small. “Remember when the most expensive thing you had to get was diapers? Now we’re looking at $400 baseball bats.” We laugh.

5. French onion soup and a baguette. We’ll never go back again, but it is tasty.

6. Inside, I am losing my patience, but trying to remember that none of this is his fault.

7. We all agree to the goals.

8. Back to our monthly calls.

9. I drive down and meet them at the house. “This is a really nice hoop,” she says to me. The men and I talk Saint Helena sports and their old coaches and the current teams while we fill the base up with water. The sky is clear and you can see every star. Her eyes are also glowing.

1. The frogs are back, though it seems a little bit early for them.

3. Whereas in other situations I might want to get straight to it, the pacing of right now is just right.

4. I have my jacket on and realize that I don’t need to be there for another thirty minutes. We laugh. I do not need to be ready this early.

5. Even through the screen, I can feel their energy.

6. The three of us work together to bring the firewood down. Bag after bag, log after log. But it goes much faster than last time.

7. I tell her that it’s the job I didn’t know I wanted.

8. I open the gifts when I get home. A book and a pen.

9. Pizza instead of salmon.

1. Will I ever get back to remembering what day it is without looking at the calendar?

2. I drag the light upstairs and set everything up. Two screens because I need one for the camera.

5. The bird keeps flying into the window. I try to pretend like it’s not happening.

4. Dishes and coffee. Worried about the things that I probably don’t need to worry about.

5. I can’t be late. I live too close to be late.

6. But really, could I live and work in a more beautiful place?

8. I tell him my day has indeed been crazy. Between phone calls and texts with the girls and emails from parents and also trying to think about work.

9. Living in a time when “negative” elicits a positive response.

1. Waking up to the sound of rain.

2. The best thing about break is the way the quiet extends into the morning. No interruptions.

3. Still afraid to put a contact in my eye.

6. Immaculate. But it’s not just that it’s clean. There is a difference between immaculate and sterile. This is nearing perfection. This is care and intention.

2. Perfectly slow. Worth it the early wake-up time.

3. Emails.

7. I ask her if she’s nervous. Of course, she isn’t. I always am. It’s good that we balance each other out.
